OnlyKey hangs on backup

I just got a new OnlyKey. I was able to get the backup to be typed out once, passing the verification.

After some configurations later, when I tried to backup (using the #1 - 5+ second key), I just got the header, i.e. “-----BEGIN ONLYKEY BACKUP-----”, and then the LED went yellow and appeared to hang.

I have set the backup/restore passphrase. Have experimented with typing speed from 4, 8, 9, 10, all with the same results.

Any ideas? Thx.

Not sure exactly what could be causing this. Are you able to load/reload the latest firmware here OnlyKey User's Guide | Docs

Thanks for responding.

Yes, I was able to load the latest firmware successfully, although I noted that it was the same version as before because it’s a brand new key. Same result: got just the header, the yellow light, and appeared to hang.

I switched to profile 2, and the backup appears to work. I tried changing the passphrase, profile 1’s backup hung like before, but profile 2’s backup continues to work.

Different Question
Does the backup function also backup the FIDO2/WebAuthn 2FA keys, including the passkeys?

Do you have a standard profile set up? This is usually the case unless you went to advanced options during setup and set up plausible deniability mode which doesn’t support backup.

Yes, OnlyKey supports up to 12 resident FIDO2 keys, these are the passwordless passkeys

Thanks again for responding. Based on your comment, I self-destruct the key, and re-setup. Now the backup is working normally. I suppose the last time I set up in a PD mode unintentionally, because:

  1. The backup key on the primary profile didn’t work (hung, as mentioned)
  2. The FIDO2/WebAuthn 2FA/passkeys didn’t work with the primary profile either.

Now, both 1 and 2 are working with the primary profile.
