Recently I was having issues using my primary OnlyKey (purchased in 2019) on two different Windows 10 laptops. I was having issues entering my PIN, either presses wouldn’t register or would repeat a press. Once I was able to enter my PIN, long presses would not register for “B” entries. When long pressing, only “A’“ would be output.
I was trying to use the OK to log into my laptop and eventually had to resort to getting the password from my software password manager. The OK, just wasn’t useable. Once I was finally able to log in, I decided to try to use the OnlyKey App to at least pull a backup off the the malfunctioning OK. Unfortunately, once I plugged the OK, the OKApp registered as “UNINITIALIZEDv3.0.2-prodc”. It may have been a different revision of the 3.0 firmware, I did flash the OK, more on that latter.
I suppose it is possible that I inadvertently wiped my OK. I was under the impression, if I unplug the OK and plug it back in, it would reset the 10 PIN entry limit. But if the OK has a register that persists between insertions and removals, then I may have exceeded that limit.
But here’s where things get strange. I purchased a backup OK threes after I years after I purchased my first OK, I’m positive that I created a backup onto that OK. However, when I plug in that OK, the OKApps “Last message received” states “UNINITIALIZEDv2.1.2-prodc”. Given the firmware version, I suspect that OK was either never initialized. Or I did, I am pretty sure I had. Precisely because I wanted an active backup. Was the 2.1.2 firmware contemporary for 2023? If I did initialize it and restore a backup to it, something else is going on.
I did try re-initializing the circa 2019 OK and hope one of my backups is sufficiently current to not have lost anything. Unfortunately, going through the Guided Setup process, things didn’t go well. It did appear to flash 3.0.4 version of the firmware. Which may have been a mistaken. I probably should have come here first. Anyway, once the firmware is flashed and the OK is redetected, it is reported as “UNINITIALIZEDv3.0.4-prodc”. The problem is, I cannot consistently enter a PIN. If I succeed in entering the PIN once, when asked to confirm, I get kicked back to the initial PIN entry.
As such, I am very wary to mess with the second OK. Especially if there is something going on with Windows. Unfortunately, I don’t have another PC to attempt any trouble shooting on.
If anybody has some suggestions, I’d really appreciate it. I’d even try purchasing an OK Duo (I was thinking of upgrading anyway). But only if I can restore the backups I have of my OK to the OK Duo.
